Bernal Investing $4.75-million In New Equipment In Facilities

Jun 09, 2006 - Bernal, Inc., a subsidary of Cerutti, O.M.G., and the City of Rochester Hills Mayor’s office, are pleased to announce that Bernal will be investing up to $4.75-million in new equipment in its facilities at 2960 Technology Dr. The investment includes acquisition of $3.15-million in 2006 for a new CNC-Turning-Drilling-Milling Center, Machining Center and a Tool Presetting and Measuring System. Bernal indicates that the investment will result in the retention of eight employees and creation of five new jobs within two years of project completion.

“We were competing with our sister facility in Milwaukee, which is the North American headquarters of Cerutti,” said Luigi Pessarelli, Bernal’s Chief Operating Officer. “Rochester Hills stepped forward to support us and we were able to convince our owner that this was the place to make this investment.” He added that the company’s location in the Great Lakes Interchange really helped. “The City is providing great service to its businesses and the State of Michigan is very serious about retaining its manufacturing base.”

Bernal, founded in 1972, acquired a building and relocated to Rochester Hills in 1992. A leading manufacturer of rotary dies and product and packaging automation systems for the package printing and consumer products industries, Bernal’s products are used to cut and form paperboard and related materials. Its customers include folding carton manufacturers and consumer product companies. Bernal also offers a range of products including crush cut dies, RP dies, male/female dies, embossing dies, progressive die systems, and others.

The new equipment will allow Bernal to remain competitive with a rival that just opened a state-of-the-art facility in North Carolina. In addition, the Bernal and Cerutti facilities may be consolidated in the future. The City granted tax abatement for eight years on the equipment, which is estimated to generate $257,000 in new taxes to all jurisdictions over the same time period.

“Without the abatement, the investment and jobs would have been lost to Milwaukee,” said Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett. “This project generates new tax dollars, retains jobs, creates new jobs and increases Bernal’s competitiveness. Most importantly, it helps to support the local economy, ” he added.
